Wilbur Scoville Lives…
2008 February 5
From the desk of the Commodore comes this charming article from the WSJ about the lovely bhut jolokia pepper. Last year the good folks at the Guinness Book of World Records declared the little bhut jolokia the hottest pepper in the world at over a million Scoville Units. A jalapeno, which quite a few crackers consider HOT, is 5,000 Scoville Units. Now I’ve had a bite of the old record holder, the red savina. Old Red has a Scoville rating of just over 500,000 and is insanely painful. It does, however, carry that wonderful endorphin kick that all good peppers do. Now would I be willing to try a bite of bhut jolokia….yes, yes I would.
