This Song Makes Me Cry

Minutemen – History Lesson Part II

Our band could be your life
real names’d be proof
me and Mike Watt played for years
punk rock changed our lives
we learned punk rock in Hollywood
drove up from Pedro
we were fucking corndogs
we’d go drink and pogo
Mr. Narrator this is Bob Dylan to me
my story could be his songs
I’m his soldier child
our band is scientist rock
but i was E. Bloom, Richard Hell, Joe Strummer, and John Doe
me and Mike Watt, playing guitar

Actually I’m not familiar with that song. But I saw the Minute Men once, if not twice, before D Boon died. I really liked them. Saw Firehose half a dozen times. The first time I saw them was at a place in Norman Oklahoma called Subterrania, the stage was plywood, D Boon bounced up and down and it started to crack, he was pretty heavy, at some point is foot went through. A few months later after he died there was an article somewhere about his death and Mike Watt said, “I can’ believe he’s gone, I look over and there’s a big hole where D Boon used to be” Coming just after the show where Boon broke a hole in the stage, we couldn’t help but laugh.

I could never get into their music, which strikes me as odd. But I always had a lot of appreciation and respect for them and their place in the punk rock cosmology.
