Spent all day Sunday building one of those metal sheds for purchase at Home Depot. Working alongside bin’s dad was something of a treat, all in all. His style reminds me of my own father. I’m glad I was there to look at the directions since he disdained them. But he is naturally gifted with his hands and the craft and physics of assemblage. I’ve never considered myself “handy” in any way, but I can at least help when it’s required of me. My dad would have been 91 this year and so bin’s dad is really from a later generation, but their values are nearly identical when it comes to “work.” That is: work should be hard, something you are proud of, approached from a place of richness when it comes to abilities, tools, and attitudes. It’s gratifying to know that I can still learn about hard work.
