Haka

November 25, 2008

Sport is filled with macho posturing. Generally, I find, this posturing has been reduced to the lowest common denominator and is completely without meaning or menace. On the other hand, when the New Zealand All Blacks perform the Haka, it is macho posturing with purpose, history, and marked menace. And it doesn’t hurt that it is performed by a group of some of the best and meanest rugby players in the world, some of whom are actually Māori.

I dunno…. if they did it for 10 minutes or something… but I think its more interesting when, as you watch, you tell yourself its a mating ritual.
